Reversed See will focus on the Mediterranean Sea, the history, the civilizations and cultures along its shores and on the changes that are now sweeping its coasts. Monteleone writes in his story proposal, “Europe has been taken aback by the season of riots and conflicts sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East; it has been unprepared for the wave of immigration reaching its shores. But, as we witnessed centuries ago, the sea that once separated two worlds has rolled back to join them. The relationship between the former powers and the countries on the periphery is shifting.”

The jury chose the submission of Davide Monteleone for its concise concept and the potential to highlight a multitude of thematic aspects, allowing for differing visual and technical interpretations. The story has a specific underlying idea that is historically rooted yet contemporary. The jury further said, “Davide’s language is rich and colorful and he shows great ability to convey the essence of any subject he chooses. Looking for excellence and high quality, and given the complexity of the story proposal and its options, he is the ideal recipient.”

2011 Grant Winner:

Davide Monteleone, Italy: “Red Thistle – the Northern Caucasus Journey”

This year, 155 applicants around the world applied for the Aftermath Project’s fifth year of judging.

A first round of screening was done in Los Angeles in mid-November by Lesley Meyer of the Annenberg Space for Photography, and Sara Terry, photographer and founder/director of The Aftermath Project. Final judging took place on December 8, in New York City. The judges were Stephen Mayes (VII), Denise Wolff (Aperture), Jeff Jacobson (photographer and Aftermath Project board member) and Sara Terry.

For the first time in our five years of granting, a photographer who had previously been a finalist became the grant winner for the same body of work. Davide Monteleone’s work deeply impressed the judges. Although he was a finalist for his Caucasus project in 2009 (which can be seen in the just-released “War is Only Half the Story, Vol Three,” the work he submitted this year showed a remarkable deepening of his work and a much more clearly articulated statement of the aftermath he is seeking to illuminate. The decision to award him the grant was unanimous.

Winner 2010 Freelens Award

The winner of this year’s »Freelens-Award« is Davide Monteleone. With his story »Northern Caucasus« the Italian photographer won a prize money of 10.000 €. The award was presented by Thomas Höpker in the atrium of the multimedia vocational school this evening. »I was totally overwhelmed by the quality of the submitted works and it was very hard for the jury to choose a winner« said the Magnum photographer giving credit to the work of the jury who had to choose a single winner out of 60 outstanding stories.
